Tut's Face Displayed for First Time
Workers remove crates full of artifacts from the newly discovered tomb of Tutankhamun in the Valley of the Kings in 1923.
British archaeologist Howard Carter had found the boy king's tomb the year before—the first royal Egyptian burial site to be unearthed with its dazzling array of artifacts so well intact.
To remove Tut from his coffin in 1925, Carter's team dismembered the mummy, cutting it in half at the pelvis and dividing it into 18 separate pieces.
The team also disconnected Tut's head from his torso to remove the king's iconic gold funerary mask.
